Major Kilt Alterations Handled
Here at The Kilt Doctor we take care of some pretty serious kilt alterations every day so alterations to the apron of your kilt is very much in our wheelhouse.
The apron is the front overlapping panel of the kilt, and altering it typically involves adjusting its width or positioning to improve the fit. This might include moving the straps and buckles, resizing the waistband, or reshaping the pleats to ensure the kilt sits correctly and looks sharp.
Whether you've lost weight, gained some, or inherited a kilt that doesn't quite fit, we can expertly rework the apron to make it feel like it was made just for you.
Fabric
When altering the apron of a kilt, careful attention is paid to the fabric itself—especially since kilts are made from high-quality wool and often feature traditional tartan patterns that need to stay perfectly aligned.
During the apron alteration process, the fabric is carefully unpicked at the waistband and sometimes at the pleats to allow for adjustment. If the kilt is being taken in, excess fabric may be folded or trimmed while ensuring the tartan remains symmetrical and the lines match across the front. If the kilt is being let out, previously hidden fabric within the waistband or side seams can often be used to increase the width.
We take great care to press and restitch everything with precision, so the integrity of the tartan and the structure of the kilt are preserved. Our goal is always to make the alteration invisible, with a result that looks and feels completely natural.
